Sustainability 101: Tencel
We often use TENCEL™ across our collections - a colour-rich, durable, and innovative eco fabric.
Not only does it feel buttery soft on skin, TENCEL™ wicks moisture away from the body due to its enhanced breathability. Much like it’s cousin, bamboo, TENCEL is also antibacterial, odour-resistant, and ideal for sensitive skin, making it perfect to dance the night away in.
TENCEL™ feels silky-smooth and lightweight to the touch. We also selected this remarkable fabric due to its exquisite drape. This property gives our dresses an easy, elegant shape, and making it less liable to crease - perfect for those amongst us who have much better things to do than ironing.
How is TENCEL™ produced?
The fabric is made from cellulose found in natural, raw wood which has been sourced from FSC-certified, sustainably managed forests. The wood pulp is dissolved into a solvent and the mixture is then pushed through small holes to form fibres, which are then treated and spun into yarn. In order to keep waste to a minimum, the water involved in the production of the TENCEL™ is recycled, while the solvent is reused to form new fibres.
We've recently partnered with Esce-Tex, a sustainable supplier based in East London, who print our TENCEL™.
Why do we use TENCEL™?
To put it bluntly, we trust TENCEL™ and it feels great on. Our suppliers satisfy our strict ethics and sustainability standards at the heart of Birdsong.
- It's made from renewable sources making it a great alternative to other fabrics.
- Machine washable, and shrink-resistant. (It will shrink about 3% on it's first wash but then resist shrinking from then on.)
- At the end of their long life, TENCEL™ fibres can be bio-degraded and re-enter the eco-system. At the moment our threads are made from synthetic materials, so we’d ask you to pick these out before attempting to compost. If you know of any alternative threads, please get in touch.
- Due to their unique moisture absorption ability, TENCEL™ garments don’t collect as much odour or bacteria as other fabrics, and can therefore be washed less.
In the spirit of circularity, at Birdsong we recycle our offcuts into super cute scrunchies and tote bags, too.
Some cool certifications.
All TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibre types have been certified by the Belgium certification company Vinçotte as biodegradable and compostable, and can thus fully revert back to the natural cycle from which they were originally, and thoughtfully, sourced.
TENCEL™ fibres are certified with the internationally recognized EU Ecolabel, an environmental quality label only awarded to products which have significantly lower environmental impact throughout their entire lifecycle. Lenzing (the company responsible for the creation of TENCEL™) also received the European Award for the Environment from the European Commission in the category “The Technology Award for Sustainable Development” (2002).
